Detailed model of the Moon, suspended above the central aisle at Ormskirk Parish Church for the event which was open to the public for three days; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 3rd – 5th April 2026. Each day had a different focus. On the Friday, visitors were able to wander freely, viewing the huge model of the Moon from not only the side which constantly faces the Earth, but also from the hidden side, all the while being soothed with atmospheric music playing continuously.
Thursday saw the space under the Moon as the venue for a story-telling session for younger children, followed by a screening of ‘Despicable Me’ for families.
On the Sunday, we were visited by the guest speaker, Dr Steve Barrett of Liverpool University, who presented a talk entitled ‘The Great Moon Hoax’. Dr Barret’s talk focused around using all the evidence available to discount the conspiracy theorists’ assertion that the whole moon landing by the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 had been staged and had never, in fact, taken place. His evidence was certainly compelling for reassuring us that the landing was, in reality, a factual event. By coincidence, this was the evening of the return of the crew of ‘Artemis II’, the first mission to re-visit the Moon since the end of the Apollo programme.
